The Forest Fire at Khotokha proliferated
beyond our control and simply we can wish for downpour to contain the fire. The
peat
soil, which characterize much of the affected areas, is highly flammable,
causing localised fires to spread and making them difficult to stop. The fires
have been raging since 16th April, with efforts to extinguish them
hampered by seasonal dry conditions and rugged terrain.
Forest fires have become a seasonal phenomenon in Wangdue Forest Division. General root of the problem is due to practice of forest clearance known as slash burning, where land is set on fire as a cheaper way to clear it for grass regeneration. Our record shows, forest fires have affected the length and breadth of Wangdue Forest Division. Among the worst hit areas are Mendhagang (Punakha) and Kamechu (Wangdue).
Meanwhile, the team from Wangdue Forest Division is investigating the causes of the fire and many speculated that fire may be ignited from the electric transmission lines. The Royal Bhutan Army, Civilians, local residents and forestry officials are battling the forest fire.
