Final adieu to Mr. Pema Namgyel, Dy. Chief Forestry Officer


Few men better illustrate the principles of forest conservation than Dagana’s forester, Mr. Pema Namgyel. A man who ultimately dedicated 36 years of his life in practicing and spreading the gospel of forest management in Bhutan. Born in central Bhutan in 1956, Pema hoped to be a conservationist. Later, he received a certificate of forestry from the Indian Forestry College in 1974, and entered the job market soon after the inception of third five-year plan of Bhutan.

He initially started his career from grade XVI and rolled tremendous energy to finally reach the peak of P2A in 2014. Mr. Pema nevertheless demonstrated a tireless work ethic a virtue that would serve him well as a forester. Despite the pressures of having to provide for his wife and children, Pema nonetheless threw himself completely into his new career at the first chance. His vision and tireless dedication to his work laid the groundwork for the exceptional system of state reserved forests and parks that Government enjoy today.

Piles of books in his cozy shelves, if you visit his sanctuary. Yeah, he is really enthusiastic reader. While in office, he keeps on telling that books are an essential part of his existence. No wonder why he intermittently debate, his shelves are full of historic & philosophic books. It takes a lot of work and time to read enough books to gain a sense of imagination and quality, he said. 

Mr. Pema served mostly in central, western & southern Bhutan. We applaud you for your years of service and achievement at Department of Forests and Park Services. Our heartiest congratulations and best wishes for your retirement. We continue to benefit from your personal wisdom and expertise, and hope you will stay in touch and join us for occasional social events.
