Wangdue Forest Division notifies all the general
public to be extra vigilant during the dry season as most of the areas under
Wangdue Forest Division are dry and windy and prone to forest fire. Despite the stern
legislation and public awareness programs in place to curb forest fires, the
problem still persists as it tops the list of threats to the country’s forest
coverage.
The impacts of forest fires have won the attention and
concern of all the individuals from different walks of life. A forest fire is real ecological disaster, regardless
of whether it is caused by natural forces or human activity. Small trees and
regeneration are often affected very adversely. Even big trees are not spared
if the fire is severe. Ground fire destroys the organic matter, which is needed
to maintain an optimum level of humus in the soil. Annual fires may decrease
the growth of the grasses, herbs and shrubs, which may result in increased soil
erosion.
This office requests all the general public to
consider the mitigation measures that they can put in place to help prevent
loss or damage to natural resources by forest fire. Similarly, the landowners
wishing to carry out prescribed burning during the legal period must seek
permission from the Department of Forests and Park Services before the burning
operation. The landowners found burning illegally will be dealt as per the rule.
Similarly, this office requests all the general public to inform the nearest
forest office whenever forest fire is seen within the general proximity of any
forest area.
“All the general public should share the burden of
vigilance”
(Kencho Dukpa)
Chief Forestry Officer
